About Craig Cameron
Craig Cameron grew up dreaming of being a cowboy.
Although he went to school in Houston, Texas, his family
always owned and operated cattle ranches in Texas
where Craig’s heart and soul seemed most at home.
Craig’s immediate family consisted of his mom, dad, two
older brothers, and a younger sister. His two older
brothers were record setting athletes, so competition was
something with which he was very familiar. A scrappy
baseball and track competitor with speed to burn, Craig
preferred the toughness and hard-hitting of 5A Texas
football. Craig was offered a chance to play football at
Stephen F. Austin University, but the call of cowboy was
foremost and strongest to this destined cowboy. Craig,
with no training, except the school of hard knocks, began
to enter open rodeos in Texas. He competed in bareback,
saddle bronc and bull riding. Craig always said, “The
worst thing that could happen to a young rodeo competitor
was to win, because winning just fueled that fire.” Craig’s
father, an orthopedic surgeon, was none too happy with
Craig’s decision to become a professional bull rider.
In the early 70s, Craig moved to the family’s 2000-acre
cattle ranch near Giddings, TX and learned the business
of cattle ranching from the famous Texas Ranger family,
the Hamers. Craig learned and worked in all facets of
cattle ranching, including cow-calf, stocker, hay and horse
operations. Craig was innovative in breeding some of his
cattle to world class bucking bulls to breed bucking stock
before such operations were popular. Craig loved keeping
the ranch traditional, always using horses in his operation
to work, move, and handle the cattle. During this period,
Craig specialized in bull riding and lived the rodeo life for
almost two decades. Winning his PRCA card, Craig
traveled all over the United States, Canada and Mexico,
competing in the biggest rodeos in the world, including
Houston, Fort Worth, Cheyenne, Calgary, and many more.
Throughout Craig’s rodeo career he headquartered at the
family ranch in Giddings. With a natural love of horses,
Craig started taking local horses from people who were
having “horse problems.” Craig grew up watching rough
and tumble methods of horse breaking in the 1950s and
60s and Craig never did believe or cotton to the
unnecessary rough treatment of the horses. Craig took a
slower, more natural approach that seemed to work.
Clients would get their horses back puzzled by how such
an incredible transition had taken place. People wanted to
come and watch the magic at work. Craig said, “When I
started making them pay, they really started listening!”
Then Craig heard about named Ray Hunt who advocated
with the horse and not against him. Craig followed in Ray
Hunt’s trail and became one of the “original clinicians.”
Craig is said to be one of the innovators of the one-hour
colt starting demonstrations that Craig has performed
thousands of times all over the world.
After years of rodeo and decades of horsemanship
clinician the road, Craig is still going strong at an age
when most men are riding the rocking chair. Craig still
starts hundreds of colts and teaches hundreds of classes
each year cost to coast and nation to nation. Now Craig
performs on a regular basis to enthusiastic horse owners,
not only on the road, but also as a regular on television.
Craig’s award winning RFD-TV show, Ride Smart, brought
him even more notoriety in the horse industry.
Craig Cameron keeps the cowboy way alive and well
each day. His cowboy humor, often compared to Will
Rogers’, and his common sense approach (Craig calls it
horse-sense) are opening the eyes of horses and horse
enthusiasts’ worldwide.
Although Craig is most noted for his innovative
horsemanship skills and exciting teaching techniques, he
is also an incredible woodsman and hunter. He was
honored by being adopted into the Crow Indian Nation
and given the name, “Captures Many Horses,” for his
work with the Crow Indians in Montana.
Craig Cameron may have grown up dreaming to be a
cowboy, but with his induction in to the Texas Cowboy Hall
of Fame, people now will always say, “he did not just
dream it, he lived it.”
Due to Craig’s love of the horse and passion for helping
others, he has been recognized with numerous honors,
